ments that were as good as or better than those at the original magnet hospitals in terms of professional nursing practice and the quality of nursing care. In our study, nurses in ANCC magnet hospitals had sig- nificantly higher educational preparation than did nurses in the original magnet hospitals. We view education of the nurse workforce in a given institu- tion as an organizational attribute, because decisions made by hospital management influence the selec- tion and retention of more highly educated nurses. Likewise, managerial decisions determine nurse-to-

patient ratios, and ANCC magnet hospitals had higher nurse-to-patient ratios than did the original magnet hospitals. These higher nurse-staffing levels were associated with other favorable practice condi- tions and outcomes for nurses and patients. We found that ANCC magnet hospitals had the same organizational traits that distinguished the original magnet hospitals in the 1980s and that are associ- ated with better patient outcomes.
