Four Rivers Chapter members are opening the doors and windows to let the springtime fresh air and sunshine revitalize our spirits.  A winter of snow and freezing rain prompted the cancellation of two of our meetings.  Our next meeting is scheduled for May 10th at 10:30 A.M. at the Public Library in downtown Belleville.  In addition to the regular meeting, Braille lessons will be available for all who attend.  The meeting will conclude at noon, and those wishing to lunch together will adjourn to the St. Louis Bread Company.  Braille lessons will also be offered in conjunction with the meeting at the Public Library on June 14th.  All persons, Braille readers and those with limited or no Braille skills, are encouraged to learn this exciting form of communication together. The regular July meeting will take place on the putting green of a local golf course.  All those wishing to join in the fun should stay tuned for details.  Well-known local blind golfer and member Tony Torregrossa is making the arrangements. On Saturday, August 9th from 11:30 until 3:00 PM, Four Rivers Chapter members, local guests, and visitors from NFBI chapters throughout the state are cordially invited to join in the summertime fun at the Annual Picnic and White Elephant Sale at Bellevue Park in Belleville.  Food, storytelling, Frisbees, and treasures are in store aplenty for all who attend. Call Annette Grove at (618-235-3330) or Alma Hinkle at (618-234-5598) for directions and further details.

UPDATES FROM IABS

By Ronza Othman

As usual, the Illinois Association of Blind Students (IABS) has been very busy.  Along with the state affiliate we cosponsored "Beyond Barriers," a student seminar that took place in Urbana in April.  We brought 21 [twenty-one] students from all over the state to the two-day seminar.

We are now preparing for our summer activities.  A number of our members will attend the National Federation of the Blind Convention in Dallas.  There we will sell IABS snacks as a fundraiser. These will include cookies, chips, candy, and other packaged items.  IABS will also be taking a Six Flags outing in Dallas on Excursions Day.  This activity will precede our in-state Six Flags outing, which is scheduled for Labor Day weekend.

We are also planning for state convention in October. IABS Idol is back by popular demand, as are the Student Luncheon, IABS Breakfast, and other events.  If you have any questions about our programs and activities, please contact IABS President Ronza Othman at 708-829-0523 or aznor99@aol.com_ (mailto:aznor99@aol.com) .
