SUP. BURKE: AND IT'S ALSO THE 21ST THAT'S DENIM DAY, AND EVERYONE IS ASKED TO WEAR DENIM. THANK YOU. [ APPLAUSE ]

SUP. BURKE: I'D NOW LIKE TO CALL JOAN JACKSON AND STEPHANIE TOMBRELLO TO FORWARD. THE NUMBER ONE PREVENTABLE CAUSE OF DEATH AND INJURY TO CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS IS AUTO COLLISIONS. SOME 150 CHILDREN UNDER 16 YEARS OLD DIE EVERY YEAR AS A RESULT OF CAR ACCIDENTS AND MORE THAN 24,000 ARE INJURED. IT'S BELIEVED THAT MORE THAN 70% OF THE CHILDREN WHO DIE WOULD BE ALIVE TODAY IF THEY HAD BEEN PROPERLY RESTRAINED IN CRASH-TESTED SAFETY BELTS. THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA HAS RULED THAT, UNTIL A CHILD IS AT LEAST SIX YEARS OLD AND WEIGHS 60 POUNDS, THEY MUST BE RESTRAINED IN CHILD SAFETY SEATS AT ALL TIMES WHEN RIDING IN A VEHICLE. HOWEVER, THE STUDIES SHOW THAT 60% OF INFANTS AND YOUNG CHILDREN ARE REGULARLY PLACED IN PROPERLY-DESIGNED SEATS EVERY TIME THEY RIDE IN A CAR. OR NOT PLACED IN-- ACTUALLY, 60% ARE NOT PLACED IN A CAR CORRECTLY. THIS IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT SAFETY SEATS ARE
