The primary follicles remain in this first stage of meiotic division until puberty, when ovulation tack place. The first meiotic division of the oocyte is completed just before ovulation and the second does not occur until ovum is fertilized. Polar bodies have no function and eventually deteriorate.  A mature ovarian follicle actually contains the secondary oocyte.
