* Transition

An electron in a bonding orbital of a molecule is excited to the corresponding antibonding orbital by the absorption of radiation. The energy required to induce a * transition is large. Methane can undergo only * transitions, exhibits an absorption maximum at 125 nm. Absorption maxima due to * transitions are never observed in the ordinarily accessible ultraviolet region.
