SECOND GRADE READING Standard 2: Reading Comprehension Standard 3: Response to Literature

Students in second grade will:

  • Select books appropriate to their individual reading level

  • Read fluently and accurately grade level text with 94% accuracy level (Level 28 to meet minimum standards with a goal of achieving 30)

  • Read books and materials of different genres (recreational,

textual, functional)

  • Retell stories

  • Read a minimum of 50 grade level appropriate books, (picture and/or short chapter books) including fiction, and non-fiction books, independently during sustained silent reading and at home

  • Compare and contrast

  • Make predictions

  • Make connections by relating texts to self, text, and to the world

through prior knowledge

  • Use core comprehension strategies

  • Know the literary terms: plots, setting, characters, and themes

  • Identify the use of rhythm, rhymes, and alliteration in poetry

  • Organize information on a thinking map

  • Understand author’s purpose

  • Recognize cause and effect
