SECOND GRADE: READING STANDARD 1 Vocabulary Word Analysis and Fluency

In VESD Reading, Standard 1 has been divided into the following categories and articulated K – 6. Students are expected to know and use these effectively in their reading and writing as appropriate to their grade level.

    Inflectional Endings

    Knows and uses Spelling Patterns and Word Families to decode unfamiliar words

    Multiple Meaning Words

    Identifies/Generates Synonyms and Antonyms

  • 7.

    Syllabication – determine meaning of a word by

breaking it into smaller parts

Recognize, understands and identifies the meaning of contractions through their parts

    Fluency – rate and accuracy
