GLOBAL CROP EXPERIMENT EVALUATED

A three-year Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE)

using space age technology to monitor global wheat production has

been completed.

Results of the experiment were presented at a symposium at

the Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas, attended by more than

700

conferees

from

22

nations.

They

represented

federal

agencies,

private companies, universities and the governments of foreign

countries.

The experiment was begun in 1974 to determine if data from

the Landsat satellite, orbiting some 805 kilometers (500 miles) above

the Earth, could be used with surface weather observations and infor-

mation derived from U.S. operational environmental satellites to

predict production of the world's most important grain crop -- wheat.
