initial test flights now scheduled for the spring of 1979. Enterprise was used in the successfulapproachand landing test project during
which time it was released from the 747 carrier aircraftfor a piloted
landing at EdwardsAir Force Base. These tests were completed in October.
The Shuttl_ nrhitpr will hp u_d at lpnst lnN tim_s Hu_in9 the Shuttle program. It will be boosted into low earth orbit by means;of
its three main engines, coupled with the two solid rocket boosters;
which are strapped to the side of the externalfuel tank. The boosters,
like the Orbiter,will be reused.
When the vibration tests are concludedat the Marshall Space
returnedto Californiawhere it is
scheduledfor major modifications. The first space flights of Shuttle
will be with a second orbiter now being assembled at the Rockwell
InternationalSpace Division plant at Palmdale,California.
