Slayton was selected in April 1959 as one of the original
seven Mercury astronauts. He later served as Director of Flight Crew
Operationsfor several years and in July 1975 flew as the docking
module pilot for the joint Apollo Soyuz Test project with the Soviet
Union. Most recently he managed the highly successfulApproach and
LandingTest Project in which the Shuttle orbiter was released from
atop a 747 carrier aircraftto piloted landingsat the Edwards Air
Force Base, Edwards, California.
