These proceduresare designed to establishcontrol of the

spacecraftand thereby extend its orbital lifetimeby perhaps as

much as 6 to 12 months. If these attitudechange maneuvers are

successfuland the gyros continueto operate,Skylab's reentry

into the Earth's atmospherecould be delayed until sometimebetween

late 1979 and mid-1980. The maneuverswill decreaseatmospheric

drag on the spacecraftby orienting it to be aligned with the

flight path.

If the desired attitude is achieved,Skylab then will be

monitored on a daily basis. Hopefully,no additionalmaneuvers

or adjustmentswill be necessary. A successfulattitude change

maneuver could provide sufficienttime to carry out a Skylab reboost

or controlleddeorbit mission on an early Space Shuttle flight.
