continue to use the existing mobile unit except for the fact that it is sitting where the school addition is planned. He stated that they would be using the temporary mobile unit to bridge the gap between April of this year and January of next year when the school addition is complete.
Michael Book stated that they noticed that staff did not give a specific recommendation of action on this item mentioning that it had been their policy in the past to make sure that temporary units are located behind the structure. He noted that there were multiple reasons why they felt that the proposed location was ideal and most practical given the circumstances and particularly because it is a temporary use, which was why they asked for the unit to be put there.
Commissioner Jenkins asked if they would be using the same mobile unit and was just moving it to a different location on the site.
Michael Book answered that it would be the same size as the exiting temporary building but would be a new mobile unit.
Associate Planner Allmon stated that the proposed unit would probably be a little nicer looking than the unit that is there now. He noted that the unit would be a painted structure with new siding painted to match and would be more aesthetically pleasing in terms of looks than the existing building.
Vice-Chairperson O’Connor asked if staff had discussed or suggested alternate locations for the temporary unit.
Associate Planner Allmon answered that staff did and we ran into the same issue as when they proposed the temporary unit along Johnson Drive. He explained that if you were to place the temporary unit to the south and east of what is shown as the existing building the Fire Department has an issue with access. He noted that the reason for that was they need to be within 150 feet of a hard surface area. He said that there was also detention that is provided along the south side of the building that could possibility interfere with the location as well.
Vice-Chairperson O’Connor stated that it did not appear that staff had any good suggestions as to an alternative location to move the temporary unit.
Associate Planner Allmon answered not really. He explained that it was basically the same issue that staff ran into when the unit was placed on the west side of the building.
No one spoke from the public.
