Approximate Time Needed: 4-5 Weeks, 50 minute daily social studies class

Prerequisites:

Brief Overview: Objectives Student Outcomes: 1. Review US geography and sharpen map skills. 2. Understand reasons that led to western migration. 3. Use creative problem solving, group participation, and teamwork. 4. Utilize planning and organizational skills. 5. Understand the impact of Westward Migration on different cultural groups: Dominant, immigrant, and Native American. Student goals are: 1. To successfully play The Trail Game --move group's pioneer family along a western route by completing class assignments. (Group goal) 2. To arrive safely (alive!) at one of 3 western destinations. (Group Goal) 3. To document the journey by creating a trip scrapbook. (Group or Individual Goal) 4. To research and present a brief news article about an assigned historical topic. (Individual goal) 5. To complete a Unit Study Guide and use it to succeed on the end of unit open note quiz. (Individual goal) 6. To complete map project, map quiz, and end of unit quiz.
