Annual Business Meeting

Southern Region ASHS

February 6, 2006

Presidential Address - Dr. David Wm. Reed

A New Generation of “Clientele” is Emerging – the Millennials

The current Millennial Generation is composed of those individuals born since the 1980s and that have come of age at the turn of the millennium.  They are beginning to enter colleges and universities in increasing numbers.  They are the most protected generation in history and are hovered over by “helicopter parents.”  The Millennial’s experiences, characteristics and expectations differ from the current generation (Baby Boomers and Generation X) of teachers, extension agents and researchers.  These generational differences can “clash” and alter the “effectiveness” of classroom teaching, extension programming and graduate student training.  “Effectiveness” will require the current generations to understand what motivates the Millennials, and we must “learn” how to “reach” and “teach” them.  The complete presentation can be viewed at: http://hort201.tamu.edu/prof/Vita/VITA2005Jan.htm
