NORTH CAROLINA’S CURRENT OYSTER SANCTUARY LOCATIONS

    CROATAN SOUND Latitude - 35º 48.240’ N Longitude - 75º 38.401’ W Established in 1996, this sanctuary is comprised 1,800 tons of rip rap’ oyster shells surf clam shells and limestone marl. Partners include the Division of Marine Fisheries and NOAA Fisheries.

    DEEP BAY Latitude - 35º 22.857’ N Longitude - 76º 22.260’ W Established in 1996, this sanctuary is comprised 1,200 tons of rip rap, oyster shells surf clam shells and limestone marl. Partners include the Division of Marine Fisheries and NOAA Fisheries.

    WEST BAY Latitude - 34º 58.814’ N Longitude - 76º 21.413’ W Established in 1996, this sanctuary is comprised 1,600 tons of rip rap’ oyster shells surf clam shells and limestone marl. Partners include the Division of Marine Fisheries and NOAA Fisheries.

    CLAM SHOAL Latitude - 35º 17.341’ N Longitude - 75º 37.349’ W Established in 1996, this sanctuary is comprised 1,800 tons of rip rap. Partners include the Division of Marine Fisheries, NOAA Fisheries and the Nature Conservancy. An additional 2,300 tons of rip rap was added to this site in 2005.

    CRAB HOLE Latitude - 35º 43.595’ N Longitude - 75º 40.628’ W Established in 2003, this sanctuary is comprised 3,600 tons of rip rap. Partners include the Division of Marine Fisheries, Division of Coastal Management, N.C. Department of Transportation, and the Nature Conservancy.

    OCRACOKE Latitude - 35º 10.727’ N Longitude - 75º 59.744 W Established in 2004, this sanctuary is comprised 2,900 tons of rip rap. Partners include the Division of Marine Fisheries, NOAA Fisheries and the Nature Conservancy.

    MIDDLE BAY Latitude - 35º 14.138’ N Longitude - 75º 30.182 W Established in 2004, this sanctuary is comprised 2,050 tons of rip rap and limestone marl. Partners include the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Division of Marine Fisheries.

    NEUSE RIVER Latitude - 35º 00.420’ N Longitude - 76º 32.000’ W This sanctuary is located on the south shore between South River and Turnagain Bay, just east of Brown’s Creek and currently has 15 - 150 ton mounds.

  • 9.

    WEST BLUFF Latitude - 35º 18.200’ N Longitude - 75º 10.300’ W This sanctuary is located south of Bluff Point and east of Great Island between Swan Quarter Bay and Wysocking Bay. It consists of approximately 36 - 150 ton mounds and is marked with four similar white can buoys.
