US Apache helicopters pounded al-Dura area after an American convoy came under attack.
Occupation troops carrying out patrols first came under attack late on Tuesday night in al-Dura, southwest Baghdad, witnesses told our correspondent. Helicopters then attacked the area. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
Ambulances could be heard rushing to the scene in the early hours of Wednesday, reported our correspondent. US warplanes hovered over the capital.
It was the most intense military activity in the capital for weeks.
Earlier, in al-Amal neighbourhood, western Baghdad, a US tank speeding on the wrong side of the road crashed into a civilian car, leaving two Iraqi passengers dead and another two injured.

In north Iraq's Rawa city, US occupation forces have arrested about 80 people, the correspondent reported.
The forces have even arrested old men and youngsters.
The arms confiscated were only light weapons, usually found in every Iraqi house. Some of those who were arrested had their faces covered due to the cold weather. But the occupation forces thought they were resistance fighters, the correspondent added, quoting the locals.
After the arrests, the forces pulled out of Rawa.
