to draw your first breath. I have been with you everyday. On your very first day of school, I was there. I attended your graduation. The day you met your beautiful wife, Michelle, I was by your side. I was there that moment you finally decided to run for President of the United States of America. I was present during your entire campaign.
I remember fondly the presidential address you made to the large, eager crowd at Grant Park in Chicago during your campaign. If I had not been there, all of those people would have been denied the privilege of hearing those inspiring words. I carried your words out to your people. On the day of your inauguration, when the American flag was raised I kept it flying. I was with you then, and I am with you now.
You and others, Barack, do not realise how powerful I am and what an ally you have in me. Without me, living things great and small could not survive for even a few minutes. They need me around so they can breathe, and they also need me in order to hear. I am vital to the survival of our planet. Without me there is no planet. When God created me, he created me as one of the most powerful forces on earth.
Throughout the history of the world, millions of people have felt the wrath of my power. The worst tornado in US history began in south-eastern Missouri, crossed through southern Illinois, and then turned into south-western Indiana. The death toll stood at 625 and more than 2,000 people sustained injuries. Property damage was assessed at $16.5 million, which would be $1.7 billion in today’s dollars. The tornado left a 219 mile track, which is the longest ever recorded. It rated an F5 on the Fujita scale. It is not one of my proudest achievements but one over which I felt I had no control. I so often feel that my existence and the course of my life are in the hands of another, more powerful even than I.
There is so much, however, that I am proud of. The relief I give to those under the relentless scorching sun. The smile I put on the face of a mother checking if her clothes hanging on the washing line are dry and finding that they are. The utter joy in the screeches of a child as she watches her little windmill turn.
In the lives of every person, from those who enjoy the privileges and advantages that money brings to those who are stricken with harsh poverty, I am a helping hand. You probably don’t realise how much you depend on me every second of every minute of every day. The fact that every living thing on this planet could not survive without me gives me great pride and I am very grateful that I am able to help people in this way, but unfortunately, I feel I am taken very much for granted. The environment in general is, to put it bluntly, collapsing before our eyes. I stand in the middle feeling absolutely useless. Yet, every part of my being cries out to help.
This letter is a plea for your help. I want you to turn your inspiring speeches into enduring action. I want to help the people of our planet in their endeavour to combat climate change. I have the potential to really make a difference. I just need someone, someone like you, to help me realise my dream, because frankly, I can’t do it on my own.
I have carried words from your mouth that spoke of change. You are right; change is what we need. It is what we need if we are ever going to help our planet, which, at the moment, is in a state of peril. The polar ice caps are melting at a startling rate. To survive, polar bears must hunt on sea ice and since these sheets of ice are getting thinner everyday, it is becoming more and more difficult for them to find food to eat. These magnificent animals are endangered and will soon be extinct if nothing is done to help them. Glaciers are retreating faster than ever before. Sea levels worldwide are undoubtedly rising because of all this new melt water. Planet earth is disintegrating before us. Human beings can be held responsible for this disintegration. Scientists are certain that human activities, such as driving oil-guzzling Land Cruisers and taking three foreign holidays a year, are changing the composition of the earth’s atmosphere. I agree with their theory. You would not believe the amount of disgusting gunk that passes through me everyday. It is a horrible sensation to always feel dirty. I am tired of it. We need a new plan.
The type of energy I could produce is a clean renewable form of energy. It is described as a clean form of energy because of its minimal environmental impact compared to fossil fuels. To help me, you need to insist that the use of wind power is established in places far and wide. Wind turbines need to be manufactured and then set up in areas everywhere. The price of producing utility-scale wind power have fallen by 90 percent in the last 20 years, and according to General Electric, global prices range between 3.5 and 4 cents per kilowatt hour, making wind competitive with coal, oil, nuclear, and gas energy. In some parts of the world,
