NOVICE - Intermediate

THE STRONG TWO CLUB OPENING Thirty-five years ago, the advent of Weak Two Bids left TWO CLUBS as our only Strong Opening Bid. This call is absolutely forc- ing to Two No Trump, Three of a Major, or Four of a Minor. The bid shows a hand that is one trick short of GAME or 23 or more High Card Points. There are many systems to respond to this bid. The most common response is to bid a suit containing two of the top three hon- ors and at least five cards in length. Lacking that, responder bids Two Diamonds, which is either negative or waiting. Opener will now show his suit or bid some number of No Trump. When the response was negative and Opener bids his suit, simple support or the next suit up the line confirms the negativity. Should Opener bid Two No Trump, responder may PASS or TRANSFER to a better spot. Remember that The Opening Bidder needs only one trick from responder to make game, so possession of an Ace or King is enough of an excuse to bid Game.

Other responsive methods use the Two Diamond response to show at least an Ace or King, and Two Hearts, lacking that. One can always call a good five card suit headed by Two top honors and if that suit is Hearts, Two No Trump would be proper. Another common method is a step response showing CONTROLS: An Ace equaling two controls, and a King counting as one control. A Two Diamond response would show zero or one Control; Two Hearts would show two Controls; Two Spades an Ace and a King; Two No Trump- Three Kings; Three Clubs four Controls. Still others play Jacoby Step Responses, showing Points; Two Diamonds 0-3; Two Hearts 4-6 etc. I recommend either of the first two methods above, because the opening bidder is looking for a source of tricks not points. ♠ ♠

Great turnout 299ers for STaC week. Hope you have plans for the Holiday Section- al, the Annual Dinner and the Winter Sec- tional. They all help toward those POTY awards. Tourna- ments are a great way to compete, gain points, meet new people and improve

your game.

Important Notice FOR ALL SEEKING LIFE MASTER STATUS

The ACBL Board of Directors has approved new requirements for attaining the rank of Life Master, starting next year.

The new regulation specifies that it does not apply to those who are (dues-paid) ACBL members as of December 31, 2009, and maintain continuous mem- bership in the ACBL until they become LMs. As of Jan 1, 2010, the requirements for attaining LM Status change to 500 total masterpoints, of which 50 must be gold or platinum; 50 red, gold or platinum, 75 sil- ver and 75 black.

IMPORTANT: This means that if your membership is not active as December 31, 2009, you will be required to fulfill the new Life Master requirements. It also means that if you let your membership lapse after January 2, 2010, before you become a Life Master, the new requirements will apply to you.
