Thursday, 27th January – Sunday, 30th January.  (Temp. 15C.)     Weather dull, cold.

and damp.   Sea very rough so can’t go on decks.   Played bridge.  Went to Port Presentation of Honolulu.   Drinks reception before dinner.   Weather improving slightly by Saturday.

Sunday, 31st January.  Brenda’s Birthday.    (Temp. 26C.)   Ian had bought her a watch in Curacao.   Weather warm but cloudy.   Visit to Honolulu.   Went to Foster Botanical Gardens in morning.   Returned by Coral Church and State Buildings.    Lovely clean city, full of squares with fountains.   In afternoon saw tropical fish feeding in Harbour, and went up Aloha Tower to view four outlooks of city.     Had a beer overlooking harbour.   Lovely friendly people.    Margaret and Geoff took local bus to Pearl Harbour and found it very moving and rewarding, seeing the “Arizona” memorial and were really moved by the US loss.  They then went to Waikiki Beach for a swim before returning to “Oriana”.  Went to see “Peter Pan” in evening.

Tuesday, 1st February – Friday, 4th February.   At sea.   (Temp. 18C to 36C.    Sunbathing, Reading, Jacuzzi, Bridge and Port Presentations.   Piano Concerts and Cinema visits in evenings.   On Thursday, 3rd February crossed Equator, watched ceremonies on deck at 2.30pm. as Neptune’s team played P & O’s team to gain forward passage cross the seas.  Weather very hot, 85 F at 6am.   Sat on deck until 11.30pm     Margaret fell asleep on deck and thought she died and gone to heaven.   We are now on our way to Pago, Pago.   The terrible weather, which has dogged our trip so far, seems hopefully to have now passed; it’s very warm with heavy clouds and sudden short rainfalls.    

Saturday, 5th February – (Temp. 30C.)    Lovely day in Pago, Pago.   (American Samoa.)    Lovely people.  Went to Village by sea to see traditional cooking.   Very humid.   Boy climbed for coconuts.   Saw traditional dancing in afternoon.    One of the most beautiful places.   Sea like a warm bath, surrounded by lush vegetation.

Sunday, 6th February – Monday, 7th February.    (Temp 29C.)   At sea.    Lost Monday as we came over the International Date Line, the day that never was.

Tuesday, 8th February.   Visit to Tonga.  (Nuku Alofa),   (Temp. 29C.)   Very hot.   Walked around port, saw Royal Palace, Royal Tombs, Roman Catholic Church and bought duty free alcohol.   Bathed in Pool on board when we returned.   Went to Big Band Concert in Crows Nest at 9.30pm.

Wednesday, 9th February – Thursday, 10th February.   At Sea.    (Temp. 22C, 72F).  More lazy sunny days.    Played bridge in afternoons.  Went in Jacuzzi at 5.00pm.  Saw French farce in evenings.   Sudden tropical rainfalls came and went.    

Friday, 11th February.  Day in Auckland, New Zealand.    Met Moira, Ian’s cousin at 9.00am.   Went on City Bus Tour around City.   Then into Moira’s car to Davenport over Harbour Bridge.   Climbed to top of a volcanic cone for marvellous views over sea and coastline.   Saw yacht race and had lunch in small café.   Moira then took us back through Auckland to Mission Bay. Moira  left us at Kelly Tarlton’s Underworld Exhibition of Scotts’ Antarctic and Sea life.     Ian took plenty of photos.   Bussed back to Downtown Auckland went up Sky Tower.   Saw two sky jumpers perform and had a drink.   On way back to ship, bought some post cards and a flag for Bob Nelson.   Watched Maori show on board at 6pm.   Margaret and Geoff met Chris, Claire and the children, had a wonderful day with them.   The children, Ashley and Amelia both cried when we had to leave, waved us off in pouring rain.

Saturday, 12th February – Temp 70F, 20C.    Chilly and windy.

Sunday, 13th February  - lecture on night sky at 10pm – amazing star lit night.
