Building Background Knowledge

The human mind commits very little information to long-term memory unless it connects to something already stored there.  

Teachers must consciously tap into students’ prior knowledge, and if there is no prior knowledge, create it.

EXAMPLE A:  Student reads “How Microscopes Work” article,          answers questions, investigates microscope

EXAMPLE B:  Students explore microscope, read article, answer      questions.
