Mallick also found student handbooks and fire safety regulations being used by

some universities. Such handbooks specify exactly what behavior and practices are not

allowed on the premises. A new strategy involves using fire safety education as a

marketing tool to attract students and parents to an institution. When prospective

students and their parents tour the campus, the fire safety features of the dormitories are

emphasized. Such emphasis makes fire protection, including equipment and systems,

competitive marketing tools.

In summary, policies and procedures should key on fire prevention, occupant

awareness and training, fire detection and alarm, and fire suppression. Student

handbooks on behaviors and products to be avoided have been used. Information

including a training video is available through the National Fire Academy. Some

colleges have developed fire safety units to augment fire prevention efforts; however, the

need for periodic inspections in student housing exists to ensure fire safety is being

practiced.
