The survey and interviews were then used to compare the conditions found at CSUF with

conditions found at major dormitory fire incidents.

The results identified areas of concern and an in-service lesson plan for resident

advisors of CSUF was developed. While automatic fire sprinklers were identified as the

best form of fire protection equipment available, they were not present at CSUF dorms.

In addition, while CSUF maintained appropriate policies and procedures, annual

inspections had not been conducted by the California State Fire Marshal’s Office due to

staffing restrictions.

The research recommended included annual code enforcement inspections, the

installation of an automatic sprinkler system, annual pre-fire plans, and the delivery of an

in-service fire safety program by the Fresno Fire Department. Perhaps through lessons

learned and cooperative efforts, similar fire tragedies will never occur in the dormitories

of CSUF.
