nuisance alarms for every actual alarm that is activated. CSUF resident advisors were

asked if students tampered with fire alarms/protection devices. The results were mixed,

leading one to conclude that nuisance alarms may also occur at CSUF dormitories.

Mowrer argued strongly that automatic sprinkler systems provide the best

protection in the event of a fire in a dormitory. An interview with CSUF Assistant

Housing Director Jeffrey Summitt revealed multiple station smoke detectors and zoned

manual pull station alarms exist within the dormitories at CSUF (See Appendix C for the

list of questions asked Jeffrey Summitt). These alarms are supervised by the on-campus

State Police dispatch center which serves as a central station alarm center. The penalty

for tampering with fire detection and alarm systems involves disciplinary action up to,

and including, removal from the dormitories and expulsion from CSUF according to

Summitt.

Unfortunately, the dormitories at CSUF do not maintain a complete automatic

sprinkler system. Instead, only the administrative building contains automatic sprinklers,
