flame devices and smoking are prohibited in the dorms. Further, the policy provides

direction on what to do in case a fire occurs.

In the area of occupant awareness and training, Summitt explained students are

asked to adhere to the student handbook. However, only resident advisors received

mandatory fire safety training. This training includes policies on fire safety and

procedures on activating an alarm and using a fire extinguisher. In addition, evacuation

procedures are explained. Anytime a fire alarm is sounded, mandatory evacuation

followed by a room to room inspection in the event of a false alarm is required (see

Appendix C for the list of questions asked Jeffrey Summitt). Overall, resident advisors

reported they had received adequate training in fire safety as depicted in the chart below

(Specific results of the survey given to CSUF resident advisors may be found in

Appendix B).

Mongeau (1999) described quarterly fire drills conducted by a fire safety unit at

Northeastern University. According to an interview with Deputy State Fire Marshal

Frank Santoya, the California Health and Safety Code requires one fire drill to be

conducted annually in dormitory facilities in California. Summitt said two fire drills are

conducted annually at CSUF dorms. This information was consistent with the results of
