FRESNO FIRE DEPARTMENT
DORMITORY FIRE SAFETY LESSON PLAN
Case Study: Providence College 1977
10 Students Perished
The Fire was extinguished with only two hose lines!
Center corridor was similar to those at Fresno State. A window was opened, presumably to ventilate smoke. However, louvered doors allowed the spread of the fire to occur in corridor. What element was introduced to the fire? Answer: Oxygen Christmas decorations caused very fast, intense fire to occur. This caused deadly conditions in the corridor. However, the fire was practically out after consuming the decorative paper. Know your exits. Protect them! If fire occurs outside your room, don’t open the door unless you can exit. Many students survived simply by waiting in their rooms with the door closed.

Do not Block Stair Doors
CSUF Dorms are doing a Good Job here!
At UNC the following factors also existed: Combustible interior finish materials Improper use or disposal of smoking materials The lack of a fire detection and alarm system The lack of fire sprinklers
