FRESNO FIRE DEPARTMENT

DORMITORY FIRE SAFETY LESSON PLAN

Slide 19

Case Study: Seton Hall University 2000

  • Fire at 4:30 a.m.

  • False Alarms Were Very Common

  • Many Students Ignored the Fire Alarm

  • 3 Students Died

  • 58 injured

Fire followed a basketball victory over St. Johns University. Fire on the third floor involved furniture containing polyurethane- like rubber. This caused high heat and choking black smoke to fill the hallways. Most dormitory fires occur between the hours of 1:00 am and 7:00 am. Continue room to room checks to assure students heed fire alarms. The practice of meeting in the parking lot is encouraged.
