FRESNO FIRE DEPARTMENT

DORMITORY FIRE SAFETY LESSON PLAN

Slide 25

Standpipe System

  • Water Outlet and Hose for use by Occupants and/or Fire Dept.

  • CSUF has a Class II System – House Lines

  • Small Fires Only

A Class II system allows only a small flow of water. It is intended for small, incipient fires. If the fire is larger than a piece of furniture, forget the standpipe. Pull the Alarm and Evacuate.

Slide 26

An Argument for Sprinklers

  • 96% Effective

  • Fatalities are Rare

  • Damage Reduced 78%

  • One to Two Sprinklers

do the Job

Of the student housing fires previously discussed, none contained a sprinkler system. In 1997, smoke detectors or fire alarms were present in 93 percent of all dorm fires. Only 28 percent contained automatic sprinklers. NFPA has no record of a fire killing more than two people in a completely sprinkled building. Only the administration building at the CSUF dorms is sprinklered. The CSUF Housing Administration has identified the need to retrofit the dorms with automatic fire sprinklers in the future.
