NHRMC Corporate Compliance Program
Vendor Relationships

June 2005

New Hanover Regional Medical Center has recently implemented a Corporate Compliance Program.  The Code of Conduct is a vital component of the program and is used as a guide to educate every staff member about the scope of regulatory compliance in NHRMC.  NHRMC is committed to providing the highest quality service and conducting its business activities honestly, ethically and in full compliance with all federal, state and local laws and regulations.  In order to live up to this commitment, NHRMC has set forth below the principles and rules regarding its relationships with vendors, contractors and subcontractors in regards to business courtesies and gifts.

NHRMC will not extend and business courtesies that might jeopardize compliance with billing and coding and any other regulations and policies.

NHRMC will not accept not offer money or gifts to patients or their families in exchange for furnishing health care services.  Holiday gifts of cookies, cakes, pies, candies, fruit, popcorn and other similar food items offered by patients, physicians, contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and vendors are permitted as long as such gifts are motivated by personal relationships, not business considerations, and are shared with the entire department.

NHRMC will not accept gifts or favors intended to influence decisions regarding those relationships.  We will select suppliers and vendors based on the quality and price of products or services provided and out satisfaction with the services.  We will not engage in unfair and unethical business practices, such as base our business decisions on personal relationships or biases.

NHRMC will not allow vendors to provide meals or food to any employee or department, unless it is part of a business function put on by the vendor with healthcare facility participants other than NHRMC and is not solely for the benefit of NHRMC.

In addition, please continue to abide by all other protocols as part of our contractual relationship.  If any aspect of this component is unclear to you, or if you have any questions or concerns, you may contact Ron Robinson, Director of Materials Management, at (910) 343-7247 or Pat Wheeler, Compliance Officer, at (910) 452-8460.  If you observe or become aware of any violations of our Code of Conduct and you feel you cannot report them through normal channels, the NHRMC Compliance Hotline number is 1-800-348-9847.

Thank you.
