From Churston Vicarage

This year the Diocese of Exeter is celebrating its 1,100th anniversary with a whole series of events throughout the Diocese. This means the church is probably the oldest organisation still operating in Devon, and in spite of rumours you may have heard to the contrary, we are confident we will go on serving the community for a good few years to come. We have moved with the times though, and many of the events we run today are about the life we share in 2009, and we hope you might join us for some or all of our celebrations.

For example, do you like admiring the skill and talent of other people ? At Churston Church we do, and we think we should thank God for giving our world talented people. That is why over the first bank holiday weekend in May we are having a Festival of Talents, including displays, and a show on the Saturday night at 7:30 pm. Why not come along and see what people in your neighbourhood can do ?

At the end of May we have the feast of Pentecost, which celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit to the Church. So in the morning we will be joining with our fellow Christians in Brixham for a joint service in Fore Street. Later on from about 5:00 pm, we are having a picnic by the church with music, and then a special Eucharist in church from 6:30 pm.

On the evening of June 27th Choros will be joining us at 7:30 pm to sing “The Way of the Hermit” - a celebration of St Cleer. They will be singing pieces in English, French, and Greek and reading poetry and prose.

Teamwork

Running a church is of course not something that the Vicar does on his own. It is a team effort. So we have people who clean, people who look after the grounds, and people who arrange flowers for our weekly service, for weddings and special occasions. We have bell ringers and a choir, and servers who help in the service. We have worship leaders and now a team of trained visitors who will help us in our outreach into the wider community. We also have a Bible study group who meet during the week, and we hope to see the start of a prayer group over the next few weeks.

For the times of our regular services please see Page 28. You will be most welcome to any or all of the above.

If you want further details please feel free to ring me on 01803 844663. Blessings - Ian (Vicar of Churston Ferrers and Kingswear)
