Accordion Book for Comparing Cultures – Grade Four

During this lesson, students are asked to work cooperatively. Cooperative-learning grouping has a powerful effect on student learning. This type of grouping includes the following elements:

Positive interdependence,

Face-to-face (social) interaction,

Individual and group accountability,

Interpersonal and small group skills,

Group processing skills.

General Tips:

Students should be comparing cultural practices and products of the various groups studied throughout this lesson, even thought there is a designated “Comparison Discussion” section in the lesson. The cultural comparison section of the lesson can be conducted as a discussion or in conjunction with students recording the information in a format of the teacher’s choosing (i.e., notes, graphic organizers). The recorded information could also be used to write an essay as an addition to the post-assessment.

Ask members of the community or parents for help in discovering more knowledge about the culture you are studying.
