    The Ministers expressed their great concern at the rapid increase, in traffic fatalities and injuries worldwide, which accounted for an estimated 1.26 million deaths in 2000 and which disproportionately affect people in low- and middle-income countries, and also expressed concern at the economic costs of road traffic injuries which amount to 518 billion United States dollars per annum, with developing countries bearing 100 billion dollars of the cost.

    The Ministers, underlining the need for the further strengthening of international co- operation to deal with issues of road safety, welcomed the decision by the World Health Organization, working in close co-operation with the United Nations regional commissions, to act as coordinator on road safety issues and urged all States to extend to it their full co-operation in carrying out its mandate.
