Prediction Methods for Remaining Life of Airport Pavement and Their Comparison

Abstract:

Remaining life is the basis of pavement maintenance and reconstruction for airport. To determine the optimal reconstruction time of the runway pavement of Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, the authors collected 3 kinds of methods to predict the remaining life of the runway pavement, respectively based on LEDFAA Pavement Design Procedure, Airport Pavement Design Method of China (APDMC) and IRI-PCI regressive relationship. According to the in-situ data of HWD, IRI, PCI and air traffic in the past several years, the pavement remaining life of Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport was predicted using the above methods. The different predicted results and their comparison are presented in this paper.

PRESENTERS’ QUESTIONS:  We would like to receive comments, suggestions, and feedback from the meeting's attendees on the following matters:

1. The remaining lifes predicted with different methods are different. From your judgement, which one is reliable ?

2. When using HWD data to back-calculate the moduli of base course and subgrade in composite pavement (asphalt concrete overlay on cement concrete slab), how to consider and evaluate the influence of the existing concrete slab?

3. What method did you ever choose to predict the remaining life of airport pavement?
