CANAL PLAZA MASTER PLAN Chandler, Arizona
MGA provided master plan and architectural design services for the proposed redevelopment of downtown Chandler, Arizona. The new plan would have used the canal located under Commonwealth Avenue as the major symbolic theme. The organization provided by the canal's axis and its major cross street would have allowed the construction to be phased, while giving a sense of civic unity to the entire project. This project was a feasibility study and was never realized. MGA proposed that four quadrants surrounding the new public plaza be built separately to house the City Council Chambers, a police building, a public library and offices. Throughout the development, retail activities were located at the sidewalk level, while offices and residential units existed above. Pergolas throughout the site would have unified new and existing buildings, masked parking structures and provided shade from the intense southwestern sun.
