ANDRES M. DUANY, FAIA DUANY PALTER-ZYBERK Lead Planner
Andrés Duany is a leader in the national movement called the New Urbanism, which seeks to end suburban sprawl and urban disinvestment. He co-founded the firm of Duany Plater-Zyberk and Company in 1980. He, with his co-founder, Elizabeth Plater- Zyberk has received international recognition as the designers of Seaside, Florida, and have since completed designs and codes for over two-hundred new towns, re- gional plans, and community revitalization projects. His work is having a significant influence on the practice and direction of planning and development in the United States. He is also a founder and board member of the Congress for the New Urban- ism, established in 1993. The New York Times has characterized the New Urbanism as “the most important phenomenon to emerge in American architecture in the post- Cold War era.” He has co-authored two books: Suburban Nation: The Rise of Sprawl and the Decline of the American Dream and The New Civic Art. Mr. Duany also was a founder of Arquitectonica in 1976, and remained there as a partner until 1980.
Mr. Duany and his firm’s method of integrating planning with accompanying design codes is being applied in towns and cities for sites ranging from 10 to 10,000 acres throughout North America as well as in Europe and Asia. Mr. Duany, his firm and projects, have received numerous awards, including two State of Florida Governor’s Urban Design Awards for Excellence. The new town of Seaside, Florida was de- scribed by Time magazine as “the most astounding design achievement of its era.” He and his firm were instrumental in the creation of the Traditional Neighborhood Development Ordinance (TND), a prescription for pedestrian-oriented, mixed-use, compact urban growth, which has been incorporated into the zoning codes of mu- nicipalities across the country. The firm has developed a comprehensive municipal zoning ordinance called the SmartCode, prescribing appropriate urban arrange- ment for all uses and all densities.
