The firm has long recognized the interconnection of water related is- sues - stormwater, groundwater, wastewater, flood control, water supply
and the need to manage our water resources on a watershed ba-
sis. Cahill brings this philosophy of sustainability to all its site-develop- ment projects. For the past twenty years, Cahill has been designing porous paving parking lots with underground storage and infiltration beds. The use of porous pavement, and other stormwater infiltration practices, reduces both the peak and volume of stormwater runoff while improving water quality, promoting groundwater recharge, and “mim- icking” the natural hydrologic conditions that existed before develop- ment. Cahill has designed over 40 such systems, all of which continue to operate successfully. For wastewater systems, Cahill has designed various systems including spray effluent, sand filters for denitrification, and wetland wastewater treatment systems. The limits and capabilities of the natural system are carefully evaluated in all site design projects, and Cahill works closely with the client and other design team members to ensure that the needs of the client are met in a way that is sensitive to the environment. A central component to Cahill projects is its use of cutting-edge computer technology, including the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) integrated with analytical computer models. Work products are routinely delivered to the client in both digital and paper format, and computer systems are used to visually evaluate vari- ous design and management alternatives.
