We’re back in business. I’m sorry that we haven’t had a Tidings for the past two months. Terry Morkert who has done a great job putting our Tidings together is no longer able to continue due to personal commitments. Terry will continue to be a member of our Board taking care of our youth programs. This issue has been designed by my friend Michelle Blohm who has agreed to do the Tidings for us. Welcome aboard Michelle.
Much has happened in the last few months. The Officers and Directors of our Council were installed at a January Brunch that was well attended. I have agreed to continue as president for the next year and Loretta Baldwin, Paul Zulkoski and Duane Timm will also continue in their rolls as Vice president, Treasurer and Chaplain. George Baldwin has agreed to step up as our Judge Advocate for Everett Dudley. Agnes Gratale will be the Recording Secretary and Judy Kloth will be the Corresponding Secretary. Vicki Rose did the honors of swearing in the Board. Thank you Vicki.
February was a busy month with the commissioning of the USS Gridley in the port of Miami, the Sea Cadets holding their Annual Inspection and our February dinner dance honoring Presidents Day. Details and pictures from these events are in this issue. You will also find some news about our adopted ship, the USS McInerney.
I look forward to seeing you at our next dinner dance celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. Put on some green and join us for a good time.
Your president, Julie Herring
USS Gridley Commissioned
On Saturday, February 10th Miami.
the USS Gridley was commissioned at the Port of
Commissioning a ship marks her entry into active Navy service. This is a tradition observed by our Navy since 1775. I was surprised to learn that this was the first ship to be commissioned in Miami. Fortunately the weather was perfect, unlike the pervious weekend for the Super Bowl. Several of our Council members attended (see above photo).
The Gridley is a destroyer, the same type of ship as the Bainbridge which was commissioned in Port Everglades last November. It was the fourth ship to be named after Captain Charles Gridley who is famous for commanding Admiral Dewey’s famous flagship, the Olympia. Dewey gave the famous command, “You may fire when you are ready, Gridley”, during the battle of Manila Bay in 1898. “Fire when ready” is now the ship’s motto.
