Lion design ideas: I would take my inspiration from the lions that appeared on seventeenth century stumpwork caskets, a good example of which used to be on view at Holbourne House. Stumpwork was a very particular form of raised embroidery that was worked from early transfer designs. The designs were worked in bright colours and expensive jewels and beads were applied to finish them. I propose to treat the lion as a three dimensional canvas and paint a surface design in layers of acrylic in bright turquoise and burnt oranges and browns. The cream highlights could be accented by mosaic glass pieces.
