Parent/Guardian Information Statement

Congratulations on your student’s acceptance to the University of Virginia. As

we prepare for our annual Days on the Lawn and Spring Fling open house events, we

want to make sure that you as a parent or guardian are aware that the University of

Virginia strives to maintain a safe and secure environment for members of the student

body, faculty, staff and the general public.

As your student attends our annual Days on the Lawn and Spring Fling weekend

from April 7-9, 2011, please be informed about the official Admission Schedule for

the weekend, as well as events occurring outside of that schedule, including events

sponsored by student organizations. The University does not officially sponsor the many

student social events that will be occurring during the Spring Fling weekend period. You

should discuss what your expectations are regarding participation in non-University

sponsored events with your student to ensure that you are comfortable with their

decisions and participation.

Please review the U.Va Police Department’s website, as it includes valuable

information about personal safety for students while staying on grounds:

http://www.virginia.edu/uvapolice/prevention.html. We ask that you discuss this

carefully with your student before they visit the University of Virginia.

It is important that your student have the opportunity to learn about the University

both academically and socially as (s)he makes his/her final decision on the choices of

higher education. This should be an informative and safe time for your student.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Valerie Gregory, Director of

Outreach, at (434) 982-3381 or by email at deangregory@virginia.edu.

I understand that the University is not responsible for the conduct or supervision

of any hosted student. Spring Fling hosts are students and not trained counselors and

cannot be expected to exercise parental type control. Prospective participants and their

parents or guardians should be fully aware of the freedom allowed by this program.

Each person signing below signifies his or her understanding of the information

above and hereby releases the Commonwealth of Virginia, the University of Virginia,

and their officers, employees, agents, and/or students from any and all claims arising

from or associated with participation in any aspect of Days on the Lawn, Spring Fling, or

any other activity while present for the Days on the Lawn and Spring Fling Weekend,

except for claims directly cause by the gross negligence or willful misconduct of the

University of Virginia.

As a parent, I have reviewed and discussed the safety information provided

through the University of Virginia Police Department’s website with my child.

The undersigned understand that this portion of this form must be signed and

returned to the University before participation in the Spring Fling Weekend.
