For action the committee recommends that the presbytery:
Approve the alternative theology ordination examination request for Candidate Jackie Nowak. Process:
In keeping with the suggested examination procedures suggested by the Offices of Preparation for Ministry and Examination, PC (USA)2, Ms. Nowak will be examined in an alternative oral examination by a panel organized by the Presbytery of Miami Valley. This examination will assess the candidate’s “capacity to make effective use of the classical theological disciplines and of the confessional documents of the church in relating the Gospel to the faith and life of the church in the contemporary world.” [former Book of Order definition, G-14.0310d(3)]
The examination shall consist of two questions patterned after those on standardized exams offered by the denomination, to be developed by the examining panel. The questions shall be in written form and presented to Jackie on the day of the exam. One question will be open book, and one question will be closed book. Time: 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 1st question: 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. Break if desired by Jackie: 10:30 - 11:00 a.m. 2nd question: 11:00 - 12:30 p.m.
Ms. Nowak would be given the first question and have up to 30 minutes to prepare her thoughts; she would then have the remaining time (maybe more than 1 hour if she does not take the full 30 minutes for preparation) to answer the question for the readers. This would be repeated for the 2nd question.
The examination panel shall consist of 2 members designated by the Committee on Preparation for Ministry, including at least one with experience as an examination reader; and 2 members designated by the Committee on Preparation for Ministry of another Presbytery (such as Cincinnati).
Responses to each of the two questions will be marked as “satisfactory” or “unsatisfactory”. In order to satisfactorily complete this alternative examination, no fewer than 3 of the 4 panelists must award satisfactory scores overall. If necessary, changes to this exam format shall be made by the examination panel.
