Truancy/Dropping Out of School
Truancy is clear warning that adolescents may drop out of school. It is often the first indicator that they are giving up and losing their way. When skipping school, they are telling their par- ents, school officials, and the community at large that they are in trouble and need help if they are to keep moving forward in life.
Adolescents who become truant and eventually drop out of school put themselves at a long term disadvantage in becoming productive citizens. High school dropouts are much more likely to be on welfare, unemployed or have lower incomes than high school graduates. Adolescents who become truant and eventually drop out of high school too often set themselves up for a life of struggle.
Truancy is not just the result of adolescents deciding that it would be more fun not to go to school on occasion. Chronic truancy can be related to a number of family and personal factors including:
