THE KINGDOM OF ENDS

Remember that the Kantian Kingdom of Ends is the world in which every person respects every other person, and where no person is treated merely as a means rather than as an end, a community of persons treated as ends in themselves.

Langton says that Kant “thinks we should act as if the Kingdom of Ends is with us now.  He thinks that we should rely on God to make it alright in the end.”

This is the idea that the virtuous person who is not rewarded for his or her morality on earth will be rewarded by God in the afterlife.

But Langton says that “God will not make it all right in the end.  And the Kingdom of Ends is not with us now.”

And she adds that “Perhaps we should do what we can to bring it about.”
