It would have been vastly more comforting had the data suggested that the agency’s performance was improving and its worst days were receding into the past. Instead, the strongest NRC oversight occurred shortly after the Three Mile Island accident in 1979, when the nuclear power industry and its federal regu- lator could ill afford to appear complacent. We hope the agency is not succumbing to compla- cency today.
