Your role can range from advising on tax law and policy issues to representing the state in administrative appeals to assisting the attorney general’s office in cases before the U.S. Supreme Court

  • and everything in between.

As a Tax Counsel, you:

  • Develop legal expertise in subject matter areas.

  • Handle important tax law issues affecting businesses and households throughout California.

  • Represent the department in tax appeals.

  • Assist the Attorney General with tax litigation in state and federal courts.

  • Analyze and draft legislation, rulings, and publications.

  • Work with the public on tax policy issues.

  • Act as in-house counsel to a department with over 6,000 employees.

  • Advise executives, managers, project teams, and the governing body, the Franchise Tax Board.

  • Act as a hearing officer in tax protest cases.

  • Act as a settlement officer to settle disputed civil tax liabilities.
