Lymphoid leukaemia in a Gaboon adder
Acute lymphocytic leukaemia, myelogenous leukaemia, lymphocytic leukaemia with multicentric T-cell lymphoma, lymphoma with lymphoid leukaemia and myeloproliferative disease, have all been described in snakes. There has been an association with retroviruses (Type C) in some instances. Special cyto-chemical stains on bone marrow and organ smears plus electron microscopy are often required for definitive diagnosis. In this example there is marked hepatomegaly due to extensive neoplastic infiltrates in portal vessels and sinusoids. The histological images are of the myocardium with interstitial vessels engorged with neoplastic lymphocytes.
