Logical Tuning Approach

Introduction

One of EPILOGs more important uses is studying performance problems after they occur. Within EPILOG, Candles logical approach to tuning is used to quickly analyze these problems.

Logical tuning steps

The logical tuning approach consists of two basic steps: bottleneck analysis and resource analysis.

Bottleneck Analysis

Bottleneck analysis finds the bottlenecks responsible for poor response time. For example, bottleneck analysis can show that during a certain period, some threads were spending 50 percent of their time waiting for the CPU to service them.

Resource Analysis

After youve discovered periods where there were bottlenecks, you can study associated resource utilization information to pinpoint why these threads were waiting. To accomplish this, EPILOG provides a set of resource displays.

You can quickly perform the logical tuning process using the system navigator, a facility for tracing bottlenecks (see System Navigatoron page 107).
