Awards recognize good examples

FOSCRL book sales program recognized by Florida Library Association

Friends to Friends newsletter receives national honor

The Friends of South County Regional Library’s Book Sales and First Dibs programs garnered a Special Projects Honorable Mention Award from the Friends, Foundations & Boards of the Florida Library Association.

The National Friends of the Library USA Association gave Honorable Mention to the Friends of SCRL in the printed newsletters category for public library Friends groups without paid staff. The Florida Library Assn. had already given two first place newsletter awards to Friends to Friends.

October 2008 LCLS Shining Star Award goes to SCRL’s Sally Bissell

Kathy Mayo, SCRL Outreach Services Manager and a charter member of the Friends, is happy to announce the November arrival of LCLS’s new bookmobile. See the Friends to Friends January ‘09 issue for photo and story.

Kathy Mayo has received the Maria Chavez-Hernandez Libraries Change People’s Lives Award.

Kathy’s work clearly perpetuates the dynamic spirit of Dr. Maria Chavez- Hernandez by expanding opportunities of information access to underserved and immigrant populations. Service projects include bookmobile service focusing on low- income neighborhoods, literacy programs, a unique assistive technology program, a books-by-mail program, senior outreach and a sub- regional Talking Books library.

Kathy approaches her work with passion and tenacity. She has secured grant funding for several projects and has been recognized locally and nationally many times for her work. Helped by Kathy's efforts, the Lee County Library System received the 2004 Business of the Year Award from the Hispanic Affairs Advisory Council for LCLS’s multicultural and related programs.

Sally is the consummate 21st century librarian who embraces digital reference and provides excellent customer service. As Coordinator for Lee County Library System’s Ask-A- Librarian staff, Sally does a thorough job of coordinating the LCLS live chat team

Sally Bissell is a charter member of the Friends

when necessary and checking answers to ensure that our staff give exemplary reference service. Sally won the Exemplary Teaching Award last year, and was asked to serve a two-year term on the statewide Chat Reference Advisory Board.

In addition to her local responsibilities, Sally was recently accepted as a book reviewer for Library Journal. She has completed five excellent reviews and received praise from her editor.
