Interactionist Perspective

The emergence of negation can be looked upon in 3 phases:

1.

The child’s task is to find the meaning of negatives in adult speech and to form a basis as to what “no” and other negatives mean.

2.

The child first uses negation and begins generalizing negation to new situations.

3.

The conversational environment supports the child in expressing negation. The child then interacts with others and is addressed by the listener.
