INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Animated Exeter 2005. We hope that your school is able to take advantage of the workshops, screenings, events and exhibitions running from the 7th to 11th February. Detailed information about the school’s week can be found in the current Animated Exeter brochure on page 18/19 or at www.animatedexeter.co.uk.

Each morning of the School’s Week, at the Exeter Picturehouse, we are showing a programme of three short animations from around the world that provide a classy alternative to the TV cartoons most of us see every day. (Bookings through Karen Howard 01392 426821)

This teaching pack contains information compiled by some of our workshop tutors and organisers designed to inspire animation projects that can be tackled in the classroom, after-school clubs or at home.

Many teachers over the past years have enjoyed the range of events we provide and have gone on to develop projects with their classes that are now being seen at our screenings: Young Animators South West, showing at 10am on Thursday 10th February at Exeter Phoenix.

The Animation Exploration will also visit the three exhibitions at Exeter Phoenix, including “The New Canvas”, an exhibition curated especially for Animated Exeter charting the history of computer animation, with interactive screens and a hands-on (literally) introduction to motion-capture! Spacex Gallery will bring you right up to the cutting edge of computer art with Computing 101B, an exhibition created out of everyday softwares. And the Royal Albert memorial Museum and Art Gallery have been working with Magic Carpet to produce some experimental animation, with the creative process on show in the Giraffe Gallery.

We would particularly like to recommend that schools sign up for the Animation Exploration Day – this will involve groups or whole classes being taken around the exhibitions and screenings in Exeter with an Animated Exeter guide to explain things along the way. The more enthusiastic in the group might like to sign up for one of our workshops. (brochure page 19).

Get animating with this pack, and a variety of experiences waiting for you in February

Contributors to this teaching pack: Mary Murphy, Jenny Mellings, King Rollo Films, Susannah Shaw, Bill Douglas Centre

Animated Exeter is an Exeter City Council initiative realised through collaboration with our partners, funders, and sponsors and we would particularly like to thank South West Screen, Arts Council South West, City Screen, Devon Curriculum Services, East Devon District Council, participating venues, local businesses, animation companies, artists and volunteers for their continued support.
