THE HISTORICAL FOOTBALL ABSTRACT SEAN LAHMAN

In The Historical Football Abstract, author and sports statistical genius Sean Lahman presents a revolutionary reevaluation of football statistics and, à la Bill James, comes up with stats such as “adjusted yards” and “Q-Ratings” to more accurately assess player performance. Using these methods, and his many years of experience in sports statistical publishing, the author presents his all-time rankings of players at each position. He also discusses how the game has changed from decade to decade, and how these changes must be considered when compar- ing modern players like Tom Brady, Dan Marino, and Emmitt Smith with players of past eras, such as Sammy Baugh, Jim Brown, and Johnny Unitas.

Sean Lahman is a pioneer in the field of sports statistics, having created historical databases for use in both print and digital projects. He is the author of the Pro Football Prospectus and the Pro Football Forecast, and is a contributor to the ESPN Pro Football Encyclopedia. He is cur- rently a football columnist for The New York Sun and author of several books. Before that, he was an editor for Total Sports, where he helped establish the gold standard for sports reference books. He lives in Rochester, New York.
