Caring for the Entire “Family”

The People You Help

t. Andrew’s Senior Solutions provides daily care for dozens of clients across the region, including Taffy, MacDonald and Snoopy. The three—a cat and two dogs—are the beneficiaries of Senior Solutions’ pet care assistance service. S

t. Andrew’s would not be able to provide our vital at-home care and other services without the financial support of many friends and benefactors. Each year, your generosity enables Senior Solutions to provide vitally needed service to dozens of older, low- income individuals and families, like these… S

“Our focus has always been on caring for families, and since animal companions are such an integral part of the family structure, it only makes sense for us to extend our services to pets,” explained Ann Bannes, vice president of Senior Solutions. “The positive effects of pet ownership on physical and mental health have been demonstrated time and time again.”

Studies have shown that pet owners have lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels and less stress and anxiety than those without pets. Pet owners tend to get more exercise, are outdoors more often and socialize more. They also benefit from the unconditional love and companionship pets can provide.

To assist older adults who are no longer able to provide adequate care for their four-legged companions, St. Andrew’s began offering pet care services. These may include daily walks, help with feedings, taking the pet to the vet and even administering medication. Services are available for a nominal fee, based on the level of care that is needed.

The services have proved invaluable for clients like 88-year-old Barbara Grabe, who was no longer able to walk her dog, Snoopy, after she suffered a heart attack. “St. Andrew’s is providing a wonderful service which is making it possible for Snoopy to stay with me,” she said.

Thanks to their pets, countless older adults are living longer, healthier and happier lives. As a result of the help they are receiving from St. Andrew’s, these seniors are continuing to enjoy the love and comfort provided by their animal companions, and are benefitting from the enhanced quality of life that pet ownership offers.

  • Mrs. P lives on a fixed income, but that did not stop her from giving her winter coat, boots and gloves to another woman who had even less than she did. St. Andrew’s Project Independence rewarded this selfless woman by repairing the gaping holes in her kitchen floor and making her home safe and livable again.

  • For 95 years, Ms. G dedicated herself to helping others, visiting the sick in hospitals and nursing homes, founding the Helping Hands fundraising group at her local church, and caring for her own family. Today, living alone and in declining health, she requires our weekly assistance with housekeeping and other tasks around the apartment.

  • Ruth cares for her mother, even though Ruth herself is legally blind and has some disabilities. St. Andrew’s provide Ruth with respite care, while helping her mother with personal care, house- hold help and meal preparation.

  • Barbara, 64, and disabled, takes care of her 75-year-old sister who is on dialysis, as well as a daughter with mental deficiencies. Recently their house had a plumbing problem that forced Barbara to wash her dishes in buckets. Our Project Independence funds paid for a plumber to give her running water again in her kitchen sink.

For every person like these that we help, there are 10 more in the area who need assistance. With your help, Senior Solutions is working hard to provide the personal care, respite services and minor home repairs these wonderful older adults need to maintain a safe, productive and dignified life.
